PRIDE Service: Several speakers and singers from Astoria’s Q Center will join Rev. Kit Ketcham and the Pacific Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for a service about challenges to and support for members of the Q community of the Columbia Pacific region. Singing, celebrating, and listening to personal stories from neighbors and friends will highlight the service. All are welcome!
From Kit Ketcham:
” I have a cool video to share for our June 4 news bulletin. Although geared toward children, it is informative for adults who’ve never thought much about drag queens, and I thought it would be helpful in advance of the service, since we will have an actual drag queen (Ginger Vitus aka Josh Conklin) as one of our speakers.

Following the service, we will hold our last monthly potluck lunch until fall. We are not having our June potluck at the Masons. We are joining the Pride folks at Tapiola Park, with potluck dishes in hand, for a picnic with the Q community and friends. It is the closing event of Astoria PRIDE. Hot dogs will be provided by the Q Center with side dishes provided by attendees.
Our service will be in two parts. While our children are in the sanctuary with us, we will celebrate our annual Flower Communion service, with a flower procession, exchange of flowers, and the story of this traditional UU ceremony. After the children go to their classes, we will join in our annual “Remembering Our Beloveds” service, in which we remember those loved ones who have died recently (or not so recently), with stories and mementoes and photos. There will be a space on the platform to place mementoes and photos and a chance to tell the stories.
Please bring at least one flower per family member to share during the Flower Communion and any mementoes you would like to show the congregation.
After the service and social time, Dave Ambrose will lead a discussion titled “PUUF Connections: How are we connected? Physically, to the world, to each other.”
Rev, Kit Ketcham’s topic is “What do men want?” based on the answers PUUF men have contributed to the question.
Following the service we will hold our monthly pot luck lunch at the Masonic Temple across the street. Everyone is welcome!
“Laughing at Ourselves” . Humor is healing but it can also be hurtful. We sometimes don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Rev. Kit Ketcham will speak about Unitarian Universalist humor and the role of the Holy Fool. .
The monthly potluck at the Masonic Temple across 16th St will follow the service.
“What do Women Want?” was a question that Sigmund Freud had a few answers for. What do women in 2018 want? Rev. Kit Ketcham will speak after conducting some research of her own. What women want may not surprise women but may give men some answers they’ve been seeking.
After the service we will have our monthly pot luck lunch at the Mason’s hall across 16th st. Everyone is welcome!
REMEMBER: Daylight Saving Time starts today!
On February 18 Rev. Kit Ketcham’s topic will be “The #MeToo Experience and how it affects us all”.
Religious education for the children is available each week following the “Moment with the Children” near the beginning of the service.
Following the service and the social time in the Green room, there will be a discussion led by Frank Logan on “Gnostic Christianity: Had beliefs similar to UU. What are the similarities? What are the differences?”
“Our Great Covenant” . Every Sunday, we at PUUF affirm our Great Covenant together as we begin our service, but what does it mean that we promise each other peace, love, and helpfulness? And how do we offer that in our everyday lives? Rev. Kit Ketcham will speak.
The monthly potluck will be at the Masonic Temple across the street after the service.
Sunday December 10: MERRY CHRISTMAS THROUGH A UU LENS: This is the time of year when the War on Christmas is supposed to start, according to pundits who would like Christmas to be the only winter holiday worth observing. We Unitarian Universalists have a different view—we think ALL winter holidays are worthy of respect and honor. But what do you know about what Unitarians and Universalists have brought to our Christmas traditions?
“Exploring the Mystery”. Unitarian Universalist congregations are full of people with widely varying spiritual experiences. In a sequel to her sermon on Nov. 12 entitled “The Evolution of Spiritual Experience”, Rev. Kit Ketcham will explore the First Source of Unitarian Universalism: “Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life.”
