Reparations for Black Americans
February 25 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Laura Gordon
Slavery, Jim Crow and continued systemic racism have resulted in a racial wealth gap between Black and White Americans. Many advocate for cash reparations. But repairing the harm will require more than just a onetime cash payment. True repentance and repair for centuries of horrific violence is needed. According to Maimonides’ Law of Repentance, there are five steps we need to undertake: 1) confession, or naming and owning the harm; 2) transformation; 3) making amends, or restitution and accepting consequences; 4) apology; and 5) making different choices. So while cash reparations may help to close the racial wealth gap, only true repentance and repair will end white supremacy culture.
